Volunteering

Volunteering at the MDABC

Volunteers are an essential part of MDABC and they contribute in a variety of ways. MDABC provides training and support to get you started, and once as we get to know you we will provide written and verbal references to future employers. When you are ready to apply please complete the volunteer application form (found on this page) indicating which volunteer position you are interested in. Thank you for your interest in volunteering at our organization. We look forward to hearing from you.

Please note that you must be cleared to work with children and vulnerable adults. A criminal record check will also be done at MDABC’s expense.

Some of the requirements are - excellent listener, have experienced a mental illness, have solid recovery under your belt, be able to support people wherever they are in their recovery and are able to commit to at least one year. MDABC Facilitator Training - Next Date to be Determined

The purpose of the training is to teach new volunteers to lead MDABC peer-led, self-help support groups. Newly trained facilitators will be paired up with each other and new groups will be opened at various locations in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. In order to take part in the training potential new volunteers must have their own lived experience of a mood disorder, have an interest in offering support to others in a group setting, have capacity to listen closely without judgement or dispensing advice, and be able to make a one year commitment to the role. Other requirements include two visits to one current MDABC support group (introduce yourself to the current Facilitator), a criminal record check to work with the vulnerable population, completion of a Confidentiality and No Advice Giving agreements and a brief meeting with the program coordinator.
