Work
Returning to work is often a logical step as we begin to feel we are managing our illness successfully. Often when we are ready to return to work, we begin to sense it. Imagining yourself working again, thinking about types of jobs you might do, and getting input from others about working are all signs that you may be ready to join the work force. Working for pay can decrease poverty, increase positive self-image and can provide us the opportunity to contribute and produce. While there are things one can put in place to increase one's chance of success in the workplace, the best test of whether or not you are ready is to try it! Look for employers who offer comprehensive benefit packages and check into their sick leave policies. Sick leaves and extended benefits are two important  ‘perks’ that can be very important to people with mood disorders or any other medical condition. Don't forget to factor in the things you may lose if you return to work. Perhaps you receive a federal or provincial pension or disability benefits. Don't forget to research what you might be entitled to and what you might lose if you begin working. Often disability income providers have enhanced return to benefits if someone with a disability tries unsuccessfully to return to work. It can be a real comfort to realize that if it doesn't work out, you can get your previous disability benefits back easily and quickly.

There are also resources available to job seekers with disabilities. Job clubs specifically for people with disabilities can be invaluable supports. These job resources can help you prepare for returning to work by assisting with everything from determining what types of jobs are right for you to overcoming interview fear to creating a winning resume. Another value of joining together with other job seekers at an agency is the support and camaraderie you receive while you look for work.
